Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain can be caused by a variety of factors, including injuries, overuse, degenerative conditions, or underlying medical issues. The shoulder is a complex joint with a wide range of motion, involving the interaction of bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Common causes of shoulder pain include:
1. Rotator Cuff Injuries:
- Causes: Overuse, repetitive motion, aging.
- Symptoms: Pain, weakness, limited range of motion.
- Treatment: Rest, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and in some cases, surgery.
2. Shoulder Impingement:
- Causes: Compression of the rotator cuff tendons and bursa in the shoulder.
- Symptoms: Pain with overhead movements, weakness.
- Treatment: Rest, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroid injections.
3. Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis):
- Causes: Inflammation and thickening of the shoulder joint capsule.
- Symptoms: Gradual onset of pain and stiffness, limited range of motion.
- Treatment: Physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroid injections.
4. Shoulder Dislocation:
- Causes: Traumatic injury or instability.
- Symptoms: Intense pain, visible deformity, limited mobility.
- Treatment: Immediate medical attention, reduction of the dislocation, rehabilitation.
5. Tendinitis:
- Causes: Inflammation of the tendons, often due to overuse.
- Symptoms: Pain, swelling, tenderness.
- Treatment: Rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy.
6. Arthritis:
- Causes: Osteoarthritis (wear and tear), rheumatoid arthritis (autoimmune condition).
- Symptoms: Pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion.
- Treatment: Medications, physical therapy, joint injections, and in severe cases, joint replacement surgery.
7. Bursitis:
- Causes: Inflammation of the bursa sac in the shoulder.
- Symptoms: Pain, swelling, tenderness.
- Treatment: Rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroid injections.
8. Nerve Compression (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome):
- Causes: Compression of nerves or blood vessels in the thoracic outlet.
- Symptoms: Pain, numbness, tingling, weakness.
- Treatment: Physical therapy, posture correction, sometimes surgery.
9. Fractures:
- Causes: Traumatic injury.
- Symptoms: Pain, swelling, visible deformity.
- Treatment: Immobilization, possible surgical intervention.
10. Referred Pain:
- Causes: Pain originating from other areas (e.g., neck, heart).
- Symptoms: Pain in the shoulder region without direct shoulder pathology.
- Treatment: Address the underlying cause.
