Shoulder Replacement Surgeon
The shoulder joint consists of a ball and socket. The socket, or opening at the end of the shoulder blade, is where the round end of the arm bone fits. With this kind of joint, you can move your arm in most planes. When you have a total shoulder replacement, an artificial stem with a rounded metal head (ball) will replace the round end of your arm bone. Your shoulder bone's socket (glenoid) will be replaced with a smooth plastic lining (socket), secured in place with specialized cement. A hemiarthroplasty, or partial shoulder replacement, is the procedure performed if only one of these two bones needs to be replaced. Reverse complete shoulder replacement refers to another kind of treatment. The ball and socket locations are reversed during this procedure. A metal ball is fastened to the shoulder bone after the rounded portion of the shoulder is cut away from the upper arm. The arm bone is then joined to the socket. Ultimately, the ball lands on the opposing shoulder side. Shoulder fractures or significant damage to the rotator cuff tendons may necessitate this procedure.
