A bone fracture occurs when a bone is shattered or broken, often due to trauma like falls, auto accidents, or sports injuries. In some cases, medical conditions or repetitive activities, such as running, can increase the risk of certain types of fractures. To treat fractures, surgical procedures like open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) are commonly used. During ORIF, metal rods, screws, or plates are inserted into the bone to hold the broken pieces in place as they heal. These devices remain beneath the skin after surgery and are often recommended for complex fractures that cannot be corrected with a cast or when prolonged casting is not desirable. In cases where ORIF is not suitable, open reduction and external fixation may be employed. This procedure also involves surgery to repair the fracture, but an external fixation device is applied to the affected limb. The external frame stabilizes the bone and ensures proper alignment as it heals. This method is typically used for complicated fractures that cannot be adequately addressed by internal fixation alone.
